The Board


The Board is the key governing body within FYA. All groups within FYA are accountable to the Board regarding their activities and performance.

The key responsibilities of the Directors are to:

  • Oversee the strategy setting resource allocation and performance evaluation processes

  • Oversee The Foundation’s financial performance and risk compliance

  • Oversee the governance of The Foundation

  • Build the profile of The Foundation and develop key relationships, and

  • Evaluate their own performance as a Board each year using appropriate evaluation mechanisms.

The Board comprises of 12 members. The Board is made up of a Chairman, a Treasurer, a government representative and nine other members. At least 6 of the 12 Board members must have been 25 years or under when initially elected for the current consecutive term and at all times at least three Directors must be 25 years or under.

Attributes And Experience

All Board members should have:

  • A personal passion for supporting young people

  • A genuine intention to work collaboratively with others on the Board

  • A willingness and ability to engage with external organisations

  • Within the membership of the Board there should be:
  • An up-to-date understanding of the issues facing young people in Australia through their personal or professional involvement in youth-based organisations or initiatives

  • Significant management experience and skills within business, government or the community sector

  • Representation of diverse geographies and backgrounds

  • Board members should have the ability to:
  • Focus on the ‘big picture’ and develop high-level strategies

  • Interpret financial and accounting information

  • Evaluate performance rigorously and challenge resource allocation.

Tenure

Each term is two years.

All members join the Board in accordance with the Constitution. Board members maybe re-elected to a maximum of three times, that is for a total period of not more than eight years.

The Chairman is also elected by the Board. He or she must be re-elected at the end of each term.
